3 Types of Sleep Apnea

3 Types of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that literally tens of thousands of people suffer with and most don’t even know it until a serious health problem arises and they discover the cause is sleep apnea.  It prevents you from getting the good and restorative sleep your body needs in order to function properly.  You lose your energy…your mental sharpness and your daily productivity goes down.  You struggle with daytime sleepiness, slow reflexes and poor concentration.

All because your body is not rested.

This is not to mention the serious health problems sleep apnea leads to like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and weight gain.  However, with treatment, you can control these symptoms and get your life back.

There are 3 types of sleep apnea you need to be aware of:

One…OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA…it is the most common type of sleep apnea and it occurs when the soft tissue in the back of your throat relaxes during sleep, causing a blockage of the airway.

Two…CENTRAL SLEEP APNEA…is a much less common type of sleep apnea that involves the central nervous system instead of an airway obstruction.  It occurs when the brain fails to signal the muscles that control your breathing.  Those suffering with central sleep apnea seldom snore.

Third is COMPLEX SLEEP APNEA…which is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.

All 3 of these are very serious and if left untreated can hinder the quality of your life.

If you feel you might have sleep apnea, the first thing you must do is get a sleep study done and get a diagnosis from a certified sleep doctor.  If you need help in taking the next step to getting a restful and restorative nights sleep, call our office today…you will be glad you did.
