How does the Esteem process work?
The procedure involves removing the remaining teeth and placing the implants the same day. You’ll be comfortablly sedated by our anesthesiologist during all of this. We then send you home to rest, and overnight, we digitally print your first new set of teeth. You come back the next day, your new teeth are attached to the implants, and we celebrate your new smile!
Over the next 2-6 months, we refine your smile after you’ve had a chance to “test drive” them. Dr. Lynch doesn’t belive in rushing to the finish. “We’re not making grape juice, we’re crafting fine wine”. Once we know that you love the look and feel of your smile, your permanent bridge is made and the Esteem Implant smile transformation is completed! The Esteem implant bridge is incredibly durable and stain-resistant. You can bite, chew and talk without any shifting, slipping or pain.
Am I a candidate for the Esteem process?
Full-arch dental implants can be a good option for people wishing to improve their oral health and quality of life. However, it’s important to know if you’re a good candidate for the procedure.
Here are four key factors to consider when exploring full-arch dental implants.
1. You’ve already had a lot of dental work done.
Have you tried a variety of treatments such as crowns and bridges in an effort to improve your smile? Full-arch dental implants can be an effective solution if you’ve already spent years — and more than a little money — trying to improve your smile and oral health.
2. You have dental problems throughout your mouth.
Full-arch dental implants address multiple oral health issues at once, so they’re ideal for people who not only have missing or broken teeth, but also suffer from failing dentitions, severe jawbone loss, total tooth loss, decaying gums or other dental problems. What’s more, full-arch dental implants address these issues more permanently than other solutions so you can avoid multiple dentist appointments and procedures.
3. You need to replace multiple teeth
Because full-arch dental implants include an entire row of artificial teeth, they’re a good option for people who have several missing or damaged teeth. Whether you need to replace your upper or lower teeth or all of the teeth in your mouth, full-arch dental implants can give you the full, healthy smile you deserve.
4. You are tired of dealing with dentures
If you wear dentures, you’re probably all too familiar with their many drawbacks, from slippage and irritation to interfering with speaking and eating. Unhappy denture-wearers often find dental implants are a more secure — and comfortable — solution. Because of the way they are inserted into the jawbone, full-arch implants allow for more natural biting and chewing, making it possible to enjoy a variety of foods usually off-limits to denture-wearers.
The stability of full-arch dental implants also provides peace of mind, eliminating worry about dentures that can become loose and make simple activities such as interacting with others and enjoying a meal stressful.
Does getting Esteem Dental Implants hurt?
The dental implant placement consists, mainly, of three phases. The first one is a surgery to place a screw-shaped post that will osseointegrate with the jawbone working as a root. The second one is the placement of the abutment, followed by the crown being placed on the abutment. However, there might be some cases where other processes are also needed so that the implant won’t fail, such as bone grafting or sinus lifting. That is why the process length may vary from patient to patient.
The beginning of the procedure might sound painful since placing a metallic post requires incisions in the gums so the jawbone can be drilled and after the post is on its site, some stitches might be needed. Nevertheless, the patient will be under general or local anesthesia and the dentist won’t start working until the surgical area is completely numb. Also, painkillers are always administered before the surgery so that the mouth doesn’t hurt after the anesthesia effects are gone. And even the drilling might sound terrifying, but there are no nerves in your jawbone and some pressure is most likely the worst thing you may feel during the surgery.
The abutment and the crown placement don’t usually require surgery. At the end of the process, most patients claim the results are worth the discomfort and that it hurts less than a tooth extraction.
How long does the discomfort last?
Even though the patient might return to his or her normal activities the day after the procedure, swelling and bleeding are common during the first days after the surgery, and discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Discomfort shouldn’t last more than ten days in the chin, the treated area, jaw, and under the eyes. Swelling and bleeding, on the other side, could last from 3 to 7 days. In some cases, the patient may be instructed to take antibiotics to prevent infections.
In case the discomfort lasts more than two weeks it is important to go to your dentist since it might be a sign of infection that can lead to dental implant failure.
What can I do to minimize pain and risk?
Follow your dentist’s advice that’s specific to your case
Rinse your mouth with salty water a couple of times during the day to kill germs and help to heal
Apply cold in the affected area to reduce pain and discomfort
Stick to a liquid diet during the first day
Keep a good oral hygiene routine.
Avoid sticky, spicy, grainy, tough, or crunchy food
During the first days after the surgery avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
Avoid food or drinks that are too hot or too cold
