More Than a Smile: Mikayla’s Story
When Mikayla first came to us, she wasn’t simply looking for new teeth. She was looking forward to one of the biggest days of her life, her wedding, and she wanted something most of us take for granted.
She wanted to smile without thinking about it.
Mikayla was born with oligodontia, a rare condition in which many permanent teeth never develop. By the time we met her, she had spent much of her life dealing with the effects of missing most of her permanent teeth.
She was also engaged.
Like any bride, Mikayla imagined the moments ahead: walking down the aisle, laughing with the people she loved, and photographs she would keep for the rest of her life. She wanted to feel like herself in those moments.
More Than New Teeth
Creating Mikayla’s new smile required careful planning, advanced dentistry and a lot of attention to detail. But somewhere along the way, something happened that had very little to do with dentistry.
We got to know Mikayla. Not just her teeth. Her.
She got to know us, too. There were appointments, conversations, laughs, nervous moments and celebrations. We watched her smile change, but we also watched the confidence behind that smile begin to change.
Exceptional Dentistry. Just as Much Care for the Person.
That’s an important part of what we believe at McKinneyDentist.com.
The dentistry has to be exceptional. That’s the starting point. But how someone feels while we’re taking care of them matters just as much.
Complex dental treatment can be intimidating. Many people come to us after years of pain, embarrassment, frustration or simply learning to live around their teeth. When someone finally trusts us enough to change that, we don’t take that trust lightly.
We want our patients to know our names. We want to know theirs. We want to understand what they’ve been through, what they’re afraid of and, most importantly, what they’re hoping to get back.
The Wedding Day
For Mikayla, part of that was her wedding day.
By the time the day arrived, our relationship with her had grown far beyond the walls of our dental office. So when members of our team were invited to her wedding, we didn’t have to think very hard about whether we’d be there.
Of course we would.
And that’s how several of us ended up standing beside a beautiful bride, watching someone we had first met as a patient begin an entirely new chapter of her life.
The photograph from that evening means a great deal to us. Yes, we’re proud of the smile in it. But we’re even more proud of the relationship behind it.
Because sometimes the best part of changing someone’s smile isn’t seeing the finished teeth. It’s watching what happens when they finally stop thinking about them.
And sometimes, somewhere along the journey, a patient becomes family.
