All-On-Four Dental Implants
All-on-4 dental implants are a type of teeth replacement solution that is far superior to dentures. Here at our dental clinic in McKinney, Texas, Dr. Jeff Lynch is the founder of the Esteem Dental Implant version of this technique. Dr. Lynch offers our patients with many missing teeth (or no teeth) the option to get All-on-4 dental implants for the best fit, function and appearance.
What Are Dental Implants?
Tooth implants are composed of three parts: the post, abutment and crown. Your dentist implants the post into your jawbone, and then after a period of time during which you heal and your jawbone integrates the post, the dentist attaches the abutment and the crown.
Dental implants are a healthier choice than bridges, dentures or other solutions in which the prosthetic teeth sit on the gumline. That’s because a dental implant keeps the jawbone stimulated and growing strong, but without this stimulation, the bone can wither and shrink.
Often when our McKinney, Texas, dentists place a dental implant, it is for a single replacement tooth. However, when patients have many missing teeth — or no teeth at all — the teeth replacement procedure is different.
Instead of placing a post for each individual tooth, our dentist will place four posts in your upper arch and four in your lower. Then the crowns are attached as a single prosthesis. This is similar to implant-supported dentures; however, implant-supported dentures often use fewer posts. Additionally, patients have the option of choosing removable implant-supported dentures. All-on-4 dental implants are permanent and not removable.
Dental Implants Versus Dentures
All-on-4 dental implants function much better than dentures. Although both dentures and implants look aesthetically pleasing, traditional dentures simply sit on the gumline, while replacement teeth are implanted into the gums. That makes dental implants much stronger — just like natural teeth. You can eat anything you want without fear.
You also don’t have to be afraid your All-on-4 dental implants will slip or click while you are talking or eating the way dentures can. Additionally, dentures are made of a type of plastic resin, while tooth implants are made of zirconia, which is akin to ceramic and much stronger.
Further, traditional dentures usually have to be relined every year because your gums may shrink or change shape, due to your missing teeth. This can make dentures uncomfortable as well. All-on-4 dental implants can last a lifetime and never need any additional maintenance outside of the care you give your natural teeth: brushing and flossing.
