Cosmetic Dentistry Is Living Art

“Dr. Marvin Berlin here in our downtown square in McKinney, Texas, where we have some beautiful murals and pieces of art that we all get to see.

I love looking at this artwork, and it reminds me of what we do in dentistry- specifically, cosmetic dentistry. Now for sure, there’s science involved, and biology involved, but more than anything when we talk about cosmetic dentistry, it’s art: it’s about what’s pleasing to the eye.

A lot of what we do when we’re designing a smile is deciding on what looks just right for that exact patient. Every room in our office has mirrors, and we love watching our patients see their artwork in them.

I’ll have patients say to me all the time: “You’re just an artist, aren’t you?” and I say yes, I am! I’m always designing and creating an image that makes people happy, it’s the same as any art- but my framework is the lips. This is a passion of mine– we even use this analogy with our patients, telling them that we create everything within the frame of their lips.

When teaching my courses I show a slide of The Mona Lisa, as a classic example of what a painter creates within their frame. Then, I get to show images of many beautiful smiles, and present the artwork that I love to create inside my frame: the lips.
