Your home dental care efforts may seem to quietly run into a wall. Eventually, you’ll realize you’ve run into that wall when you notice your brushing, flossing, and rinsing has no aesthetic impact on your smile. At this point, you can go with a teeth whitening plan to elevate your smile. Or you can take a bigger, bolder step to porcelain veneers for results that are permanent. Take a look at how veneers can enhance your smile and see how they compare to teeth whitening treatment.
How Veneers Work
Veneers don’t chemically change the color of teeth, as does teeth whitening. Instead, veneers whiten teeth by covering up imperfections. They’re made of thin sheets of tooth-colored porcelain and they’re applied to the visible areas of teeth.
After your teeth have been cleaned and dried, your dentist will shave will prepare a tooth for a veneer by shaving off a thin layer of enamel and making the area rough in order to help the veneer adhere to the tooth. The veneer will be affixed to the tooth using dental bonding, and then it will be cured.
What Makes Them Special
With proper care, your veneers can last you a decade or more – and they’ll maintain their color. One of the biggest benefits of veneers is that they are resistant to staining.
Though a thin layer of enamel typically has to be removed for veneers, there are generally no ill-effects of doing so. Having veneers applied won’t ruin your teeth, even when the veneers finally break down and have to be removed. There are alternatives styles of veneers that can be applied with removing enamel, though you’ll need to replace those much sooner than you would with conventional veneers.
